Concert promoter Live Nation, which operates 38 amphitheaters throughout the country, including two in New Jersey, will only serve locally-sourced produce and humane-certified meats at its venues starting this week.

Live Nation is swapping out its conventional fast-food offerings for hamburgers, hot dogs and sausages with humane bona fides at its 38 amphitheaters in the United States, and will only source produce from a 100-mile radius of the venue. (The change is only at its amphitheaters, which include the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel and the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden — serving locally-sourced produce at indoor venues in February might mean a lot of baked potatoes.)

All the meat served at the amphitheaters must carry Certified Humane®, Global Animal Partnership or Animal Welfare Approved certification, and Live Nation has also hired Hugh Acheson, the “Top Chef” judge and James Beard Award-winning chef to develop vegetarian options for music fans.

It will cost the company more — about $1 million a year — but the company says that supporting local farms and caring for the animals and the environment makes good business sense in the long run.

So will you be forced to shell out $10 for a tofu dog? Brian Yost, the company president of onsite products for North American concerts, tells Nation’s Restaurant News that the it reducing the commission it gets from its concessionaires to avoid passing the cost to consumers.
