The Meyer Company Ranch is located in Montana's Big Blackfoot River valley near the town of Helmville at the southern edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness, just west of the Continental Divide. Its 40,000 acres are shadowed by the Garnet Mountains and surrounded by rolling hills of sagebrush and pine.
When Robert E. Meyer came to the region in 1990, he ended his search for the perfect place to pursue his lifelong dream of returning to his agricultural roots by ranching. He settled in this region, steeped in ranching history, and successfully cultivated that history. Yet raising cattle for the future would also mean looking back to the "old-fashioned way."
To Meyer, that meant raising his Red Angus cattle without the growth-promoting antibiotics and hormones that are used in the conventional beef industry. Since its founding in 1996, Meyer Natural Angus also established firm company philosophies about humane animal treatment, protection of the environment and meat safety. Today, the Meyer ranch has one of the nation’s largest, most highly acclaimed Red Angus herds.
“We have always believed that focusing on quality genetics and becoming a leader in the agricultural field could not be achieved without an ethical attitude towards the land and the animals,” says Michael L. Cooper, president and CEO of Meyer Natural Foods. “We practice responsible stewardship of the land and humane treatment of our cattle, and that’s good for the environment and good for business.”
The Meyer ranch restores riparian areas through bank stabilization and fencing, and cattle are grazed below the carrying capacity of the land. Wildlife, including grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, native Westslope cutthroat trout and elk, which have thrived throughout the wilderness areas surrounding the ranch, now live on and migrate through the large Meyer ranch.
Meyer Natural Angus cattle are never fed animal byproducts. Rather, they are raised on a strict diet of wholesome grains and forages. The company’s cattle tracking system also ensures the quality of the product from the ranch to the consumer. Meyer Natural Angus cattle are born and raised in the United States by certified ranchers who strictly adhere to Meyer’s raising practices.
In 2001, Meyer Natural Angus won “Best-of-Show” from the American Tasting Institute, designating it the best-tasting natural beef product on the market.
Meyer Natural Angus is distributed in U.S. restaurants and retail stores, including Whole Foods Markets in the Northeast, Florida, Texas and Chicago; Andronico’s, Draeger’s, Mollie Stone’s and PW Markets in Northern California; and Shaw’s, Wegman’s and Roche Bros. in the Northeast.
